Incoming Loggers Enjoy Big 2010 Debuts

February 22, 2010

Division I college baseball got underway in a big way this past weekend as a number of incoming Loggers hit the field for the first time in 2010, some for the first time as a collegiate athlete.

The Logger headliner from this past weekend had to have come from the University of Arizona where freshman hurler Kurt Heyer took full advantage of being named Arizona's Friday night starter by striking out 13 batters over 6 innings in a season-opening win over visiting Utah Valley.

There were other notables making their collegiate debuts as well including freshman third basemen Jacob Lamb (Washington) who opened the season hitting in the three-hole for the Huskies.  Blair Moore, who played with the Loggers as a high school senior last summer, also made his first collegiate appearance and went 3 for 9 over the weekend for San Diego State.

One player who is entering his sophomore season, made his UCLA debut this weekend by clubbing two home runs and driving in five runs is Dean Espy.  Espy started at the hot corner on opening night for the Bruins and figures to be a big part of their lineup this season.

Returning Logger Tony Mueller (Winona State) also got his sophomre season underway at the Metrodome on Sunday evening as he laced the first pitch of the 2010 season for a triple in game one of a twinbill and then pitched five innings of one run baseball in the night cap, striking out six.
