College Baseball Weekend Preview #2

College Baseball Weekend Preview #2

February 26, 2010

It’s time for week number two of our college baseball weekend preview for your future La Crosse Loggers.  Last week we saw some strong performances from numerous players such as Dean Espy and Kurt Heyer as they will look for similar success again this weekend.

Espy, Bruins out to fast start in 2010

Dean Espy (UCLA – So. – IF) has gotten out to a fast start in his first season with the UCLA Bruins as he is 3-for-6 (.500) on the young season with two home runs and five RBI’s.  This weekend the Bruins face the Vanderbilt Commodores, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, and the USC Trojans.  The game on Sunday against USC will be played at Dodger Stadium at 2:00 pm.

Washington hosts first home series of the year

The University of Washington Huskies opens their 2010 home slate this weekend as they take on Fresno State in a three-game series this weekend.  Jacob Lamb (Washington – Fr. – IF) started in all three of the teams opening weekend games as he hit an RBI single against New Mexico State.  Lamb will look to improve on his early hitting woes as he is batting .100 on the season in the three hole for the Huskies.

Heyer earns Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors

The University of Arizona Wildcats will host a three game series this weekend against Long Beach State University.  Kurt Heyer (Arizona – Fr. – RHP) will get the nod once again on Friday after being named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week after his performance against Utah Valley.  He was also named a “Louisville Slugger” National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball.  Heyer will look to build off of his impressive first outing as he struck out 13 of the 22 batters he faced while leading the Wildcats to their first win of the season.  The 13 strikeouts were enough to place Heyer second on the all-time freshman single game strikeout list in Arizona history.  Arizona went on to win their next two games as well last weekend as they are now 3-0 heading in to this weekend’s series.

In-state rivals face off in California

The San Diego State University Aztecs will face the San Diego University Toreros this weekend in a four-game series.  The first game is already in the books as San Diego State came away with the 5-2 victory.  Former Loggers shined in this first matchup as Addison Reed picked up the victory and Cory Vaughn hit his second home run in as many games to help lead the Aztecs to the win.  Blair Moore (San Diego State – Fr. – IF) is currently second on the team with a .412 batting average.

Hawaii takes game one of three game series against Ducks

The University of Hawaii took game one of a four game series this weekend by the score 4-3 over the Oregon Ducks.  Oregon was ranked #25 in the NCAA Top 25 Poll.  Trent Allianic (Hawaii – Fr. – RHP) has collected 2.1 innings of work so far on the mound as he allowed just two hits and no runs allowed.

Jesernig, Waves to hit the road for three game series against Cal State Northridge

Pepperdine is set to face Cal State Northridge in a three-game road-home-road series this weekend after getting out to a 2-2 start early this season.  Brad Jesernig (Pepperdine – So. – RHP) got out to a good start in his 2010 season as he struck out three batters in two innings pitched while allowing no earned runs.

Dallas Baptist look to get back on track against Western Michigan

The Dallas Baptist Patriots will look to get back in the win column after falling short to #5 Texas 7-2 earlier this week.  The patriots begin a three-game series against Western Michigan on Friday as Ryan Behmanesh (Dallas Baptist – So. – RHP/IF) will look to stay hot as he is hitting .438 with seven hits and two RBI’s on the early season.

Florida Gulf Coast looks to stay perfect

Mike Reeves (Florida Gulf Coast – Fr. – C) and the Eagles will put their perfect 3-0 record on the line this weekend as they head in to a three-game series with Sacred Heart University.  Reeves has performed great so far filling in for the teams injured starting catcher as he is fourth on the team with a .444 average with four RBI’s.

Other future Loggers in action this weekend

Taking part in various weekend tournaments include Memphis, Wichita State, UC-Irvine, and Nebraska.

Bennett Pickar (Oral Roberts – Fr. – C) and Oral Roberts open their season this weekend as they travel to Miami to take on Florida International in a three-game series.

Cal-State Fullerton (Carlos Lopez – Cal-State Fullerton – Fr. – IF/OF) will face TCU in a three game series.

Winona State will travel to the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota for a two game series against Wayne State.  Tony Mueller (Winona State – So. – OF/RHP) will look to build off his early season success which includes a triple at the plate and five innings of work on the mound as he allowed just one run while striking out six.
